Kids Sunglasses
for Eye Protection

Today, more than ever, children should wear kids sunglasses. They should not be the toy sunglasses but real sunglasses that indicates the UV protection level just as adults sunglasses.

Do Kids Need Sunglasses?

Your child need sun protection just as much as you and sometimes even more because your child spends more time outdoors and in direct sunshine.

Retina that is exposed to ultraviolet radiation is associated with cataracts and macular degeneration. Sun damage builds over time. So the sooner you start protecting your child's eyes, the lower the risk of developing eye problem in the future.

Babies below 6 months old should never be exposed to direct sunlight. Once they reach 6 months they should wear baby sunglasses when exposed to the sun.

As a parent you need to teach your child early on the importance of wearing sunglasses - just as we teach them how to brush teeth and wear seat belts in the car. This is to develop a good habit but most importantly we as parents must be the role model.

How to Choose Kids Sunglasses?

The most important protection issue is how often your child actually wear the sunglass. The crucial factors to consider are the ones that will influence your child to keep them on their face.

Essentially the best or the right choice kids sunglasses is the one which the child will actually want to wear most of the time when outdoors in the sun.

Do not be overly distracted by comparing the UV protection factor. With the diversity of toddler sunglass choice select one that makes your child want to wear it often.

What are the factors that influence the desire of your child to wear the sunglass? Easy, let your child select it themselves but the following features must be considered:

  • make sure the sunglasses fit well
  • lenses should be impact resistant for example polycarbonate
  • lenses should be large enough to shield the eyes from most angles

Take a QUIZ! If the sun does not bother the eyes, do one still need to wear sunglasses? YES or NO?

The answer is YES. The sun has damaging UV rays that can cause photokeratitis - corneal sunburn and permanent retinal damage.
